# Apply for a grant

Involve OCE early when a funder needs a legal recipient or an agreement.

A grant can help your collective carry out a defined activity. The funder’s conditions and OCE’s hosting framework both need to fit the proposed arrangement.

## Before applying

Contact OCE with the opportunity, deadline, proposed activity and budget. Check whether the funder accepts applications from fiscally hosted initiatives. Do this before making commitments in OCE’s name.

## Can we receive public funding?

OCE is open to exploring public funding for your collective on a case-by-case basis. Acceptance depends on the funder’s requirements and whether the proposed arrangement is compatible with OCE’s hosting framework. Contact us early to discuss the opportunity and confirm whether OCE can receive the funding before making commitments in OCE’s name.

## Before signing

Share any draft grant agreement with OCE. The team will confirm the legal recipient, authorised signature and the documents required between OCE and your collective, including the mandatory mandate agreement for receiving grants through OCE.

For a U.S. private foundation, ask about [Equivalency Determination](/oceurope/how-it-works/equivalency-determination-certificate.md). Do not promise a route before OCE has checked it.

## Receiving the funds

OCE provides the appropriate payment instructions. Once receipt and allocation have been confirmed, the funds are recorded on your collective’s page. Keep any restrictions on their use with your budget records.

## During and after the activity

Track the reporting deadlines and the information the funder requires. Provide the agreed reports and tell OCE if the activity, budget or timetable changes. Public updates can inform your community, but they do not automatically replace a funder’s report.
